A total lunar eclipse will occur on Tuesday, November 8, because the Moon, the Sun, and the Earth will align. During a total lunar eclipse, 100% of the Moon is obscured by the Earth's cone-shaped shadow, known as the umbra.



**This total lunar eclipse will be visible in Asia, Australia, North America, parts of northern and eastern Europe (only in the penumbral phase), and most of South America. It can be viewed safely without a telescope, but it is recommended.**



When the Moon is inside the umbra, it takes on a reddish hue, which is why lunar eclipses are sometimes called "blood moons." According to NASA, the same phenomenon that makes our skies blue and our sunsets red causes the Moon to turn red during a lunar eclipse.



**This is called Rayleigh scattering. Light travels in waves, and different colors of light have different physical properties. Blue light has a shorter wavelength and is scattered more easily by particles in Earth's atmosphere than red light, which has a longer wavelength.**



“For this reason, during an eclipse, light must first pass through our planet's atmosphere. Red light passes through the atmosphere more directly. During this journey, Earth's atmosphere preferentially scatters the shorter wavelength blue light, while red and orange light manage to reach the lunar surface. The more dust or clouds there are in Earth's atmosphere during the eclipse, the redder the Moon will appear,” explained the Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo.
