El asteroide 2022 AP7, o como lo llaman los expertos “asesino de planetas”, tiene una medida aproximada de 1,5 km y fue descubierto en un lugar difícil de reconocer, ya que se esconde tras el brillo del Sol. Fue captado por el telescopio de Víctor Blanco en Chile, el cual es utilizado específicamente para estudiar materia oscura.
A group of researchers from NORILab in the United States, who conduct different studies through different observatories, announced that the asteroid, “is the largest potentially hazardous object for Earth that has been discovered in the last eight years.” Astronomer Scott Sheppard, who made the discovery, said that 2022 AP7 crosses Earth's orbit, making it a potentially hazardous celestial body. However, he clarified that a collision with Earth is only a remote possibility, as it crosses Earth's orbit but does not have a trajectory that could cause a disastrous end.
Asteroid 2022 AP7 takes approximately five years to orbit the Sun in its current orbit, and its closest point to Earth is several million kilometers away. However, experts say its position will change, so it is not known exactly when a collision might occur; for this reason, it is estimated that it would be in the distant future.
Sheppard explains that in the worst-case scenario, the asteroid impact on Earth would have a devastating effect on the planet as we know it. He mentions that at the moment of the collision, dust would be dispersed in the air, causing a cooling effect and resulting in a mass extinction on a scale not seen on the planet for millions of years.
He also stated that there are currently around 30,000 asteroids of all sizes that have been cataloged as near-Earth objects, yet none pose a threat to the world for the next 100 years. However, according to the astrologer, there are currently between 20 and 50 near-Earth asteroids that have yet to be identified, as they are located in the sun's glare, limiting their visibility.
